In the 80s it was air-cooled, then air/oil-cooled in the 90s. Over time, the engine has gone through many iterations. In fact, in many ways, BMW defined it with the BMW R 80 G/S, a bike that confused people with its identity as not an ideal highway bike, and not a dirt bike… but some of both.
